#Memories - Chapter 2: New Yorking

Crowded! Astonishing! Truly Mighty! These are the words that best sum up my experience while visiting New York City, USA. Here are some notes I consider worth sharing in this brand-new chapter of #Memories.

To make a long story short, I must admit that the city completely blew me away — not only because I had the chance to experience the language I love in its natural environment, but also because of how strikingly organized and clean it felt, especially when compared to less developed countries such as Chile. People seem genuinely accustomed to keeping their city clean, and you fall in love with that feeling from the very beginning. (Not to mention that most trash bins are divided to promote recycling — cool, isn’t it?)

My journey was unforgettable. However, the people I met — or at least most of them — were not as easy-going as I had expected. I must admit I was a bit disappointed, especially after reading so many times that New Yorkers are sooooooooo kind. (Well… that was not exactly my case.) Still, I understand it: this is a city where people are always in a rush, constantly trying to get through the day while completing endless responsibilities. In one way or another, you end up missing some of the special traits of Latin people — a heartfelt hug, our warmth, or even a simple handshake or genuine eye contact when asking for help in that crowded and confusing subway system.

When it came time to eat… OMG. The options were endless. From large Italian restaurants to Asian-themed places, and finally the simple yet delicious food trucks scattered all over the city — Manhattan was full of them. I clearly remember a young man who had his own food stand near Battery Park. His food was delicious and completely changed my perception of eating on the street. (If you ever read this, my friend, let me tell you: your salad and roasted chicken were amazing. Yummy!)

As you can imagine, temperatures were around 34°C most days, since it was summer, so staying hydrated was a must. That being said, I absolutely loved the so-called American ICEE. Seriously — I loved it. I never thought I would actually drink one, since I always believed it was something you could only see in The Simpsons or Hey Arnold! And last but not least… what is going on with fast-food portion sizes?! Now I understand why Americans struggle so much with weight issues. Once I ordered a large soda — and it was truly large. About 800–900 ml. I could barely finish it.

Speaking of prices, I honestly couldn’t find many cheap places, except for Century 21 or BookOff. I was shocked by the amount of money people spend every day, especially on food and clothing. I really wanted to buy something nice for my mother or friends, but prices were incredibly high, so you constantly had to think twice — or simply head to a souvenir shop to hear that lovely ka-ching sound. Just to give you an idea: a simple can of soda cost around USD 3; a McDonald’s combo was about USD 13; and even the tiniest souvenir at museums like the MET or the Museum of Natural History cost no less than USD 10. And let’s not even talk about hotel prices… my wallet truly suffered in NYC.

I also find it important to highlight the incredible number of attractions I had the chance to visit. Let me start with the Lady in Green — what a magnificent gown she wears! Full of history, deep emotions, and offering an unforgettable view of Manhattan. (I had no idea how many ferries were available until I was actually standing by the shore.) Second, Times Square. Believe me when I say it was the most crowded place I had ever walked through — completely unreal. People taking pictures from every angle, speaking dozens of languages, surrounded by enormous screens lighting up every building. I-N-S-A-N-E. And third, the unforgettable walk along 7th Avenue, including the stunning Grand Central Terminal and iconic buildings such as the Chrysler Building — and yes, even Trump Tower.

Of course, no trip to New York is complete without capturing the perfect panoramic view of the city. For that reason, I headed to the Rockefeller Center at night and the Empire State Building during the day — and what a view I got. That is the exact moment when you truly understand why this city has the reputation it does. I honestly felt like I was on top of the world. That said, every observatory is priceless — but if you suffer from vertigo, you might want to think twice before going up to the 67th floor or higher.

When it was time to leave the city, I felt as if I had barely scratched the surface. Still, the next time I visit NYC, I think I’ll choose long lunches, slower walks, and far less exhausting sightseeing. All in all, it is an experience everyone should live at least once — and even better if you get to share it with the love of your life, just like I did.

  6. I had already heard that the city of New York was more or less expensive but I never thought so much .. but for something it must be, it is a very famous city and that is the cost of living that experience, hopefully one day I will be able to go there and experience the beauties of that city. Apart from the fact that as it is a developed country, the people there have more culture and as you mentioned it, they do not throw the garbage on the street and take care of the planet more, not like here in Chile, where people only dirty and abandon animals.
