I'm seated in the teacher's room of the place that has embraced me on my first three years as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language (Yeah, I know... you may think I'm too young to be that worried) but it's inevitable to feel kinda sad when it comes the time to realize that a large number of the students with whom you share you daily life with, will eventually leave this school at the end of this year because of two reasons: Firstly, my school will go from a Semi-Private School to a Private one, this is because of the new educational reform that is hitting my country and that unfortunately, many schools have taken the decision between what we commonly say "The Sword and The Wall". Now, this is not because the families of my students want to, but because it will be impossible for them to pay large monthly amounts of money to make their kids stay in here. And secondly, the fear (they might be already feeling) because probably they won't find any school with enough room to accept them as plenty of other students are in the same situation and because the whole system is undoubtedly collapsing. (Fun fact: The Ministry of Education does not even want to accept this, even though they are almost drowning).
Now, let me point out some interesting facts, I don't want to get politically involved, but... Mrs. President, I just can't believe that you are so blinded to not understand us for a single moment... You just said that this reform will "Increase the Quality in Education" YOU ARE WRONG!, you just said this "lovely" reform will "Close the Gap between Private and Public Education" YOU ARE SO WRONG! and what's more... you also pointed out that this "breathtaking" reform will "Help the Medium Class in our country" but DAMN! YOU ARE SO FUCKING WRONG! If few words: You just fucked this shit up, not only you, but all those by your side supporting your words.
Believe it, I'm not that keen on analyzing things related to public politics, because I am dissapointed of it since I was a high school grader, but it's really worrying to see that something that you have studied for quite a long time at university is being underestimated by the head people of this country, even when they don't even know what goes on within a classroom and their ideas sometimes are so unrealistic! Changing the current educational reality in Chile can not be covered with a finger as when we covere ourselves from the shades of the sun with our hands, this is more complex than it looks.
It is true that there's plenty of work to do in Public, Semi-Private and Private Schools, but changing the reality from one day to another, was by far the worst decision ever. Why didn't they really start this "clean up process" with those schools where urgent need was required? why didn't they start a new plan with those schools facing so poor and lame results? why didn't they just... ask us? Sometimes I feel it is too late to go back and re-think my professional career, but in some other occasions I just try to find out the way to overcome this fear, this nerve breaking feeling, this sadness... although I know I might not me the only teacher who feels this way.
The only thing that makes my professional life to have a meaning by now, it is the love I get when I am close to those bright minds that make my life happy, those that I feel are my sons and daughters at school, those that make my life feel complete, those that take the best of me every single day, those that are the only ones well worthy of respect...
I do really hope this shits comes to an end, so I can keep on feeling the way I feel when I am close to them, and also because it would be a pleasure to keep on helping in their academical development.

It is really sad how politicians play with the education of the country. And I believe that the education is not on sale, but to begin they should make a better public education and then make what they are doing now, but as they want to give a good "image" they make it wrongly. I can imagine how sad this must be for you as a real teacher, and as part of those teachers that only work for the money.
ResponderEliminarIn my opinion what do you do is very important because the students need attention, understanding and someone ask you What’s wrong.
ResponderEliminarThe teachers must have more attention with the students.
Is beatiful when the teachers have a special bond with your students and can share beautiful moments in your lifes.
The society need more teachers as you
